How many Upanishads are there, and what are they
There are over 200 known Upanishads, each associated with various aspects of Hinduism, such as Shaktism (Goddess Shakti), Shaivism (Lord Shiva), Vaishnavism, Sannyas, Yoga, and Samanya-Vedanta.
Among the Upanishads, the Brihadaranyaka and the Chandogya Upanishads are considered the oldest. They are believed to have been composed early in the development of Upanishadic thought.
Upanishads like the Aitareya, Kauṣītaki, and Taittiriya are thought to date back to the mid 1st millennium BCE, representing an important period in the evolution of Upanishadic literature.
Some Upanishads, such as the Katha, Mundaka, and Prasna, show Buddhist influence and are likely to have been composed after the 5th century BCE. These Upanishads, along with a few others, are known as the Principal Upanishads.
Apart from the Principal Upanishads, there are additional Upanishads that have emerged over time. These include the Kena, Mandukya, and Isa Upanishads, among others.
The Upanishads collectively represent a rich body of philosophical and spiritual literature, exploring fundamental questions about the nature of reality, the self, and the ultimate truth. They have had a profound influence on Hindu philosophy and spiritual traditions, offering seekers of knowledge profound insights into the nature of existence.
